Confession: I’m absurdly excited that new episodes of “Glee” start airing next week. It’s not just because I have a fondness for shows that swing between wickedly funny and heartbreaking … or because I like to watch people far more skilled than I am sing and dance. “Glee” also gets my nostalgia going — my high school didn’t have show choir, but we did have drama club and summer theater, both of which were havens for nerds and outcasts. None of us fit in, but at least we all didn’t fit in together.

So, to celebrate the return of “Glee,” I’m putting together a list of the biggest, best nerd characters in musical theater.

Allow me to engage in a few heteronormative stereotypes this morning, just briefly. Gals love smart, sensitive guys that live a life of the mind, guys that can peer into another’s soul and know exactly what a person is thinking. But gals also love strong, muscular guys that can defend them in bar fights, if necessary. If these are the things that girls really look for in potential mates, then clearly, all girls should be flocking to matches of chessboxing. Right?
