If “Stuff You Missed in History Class” could only include “stuff schools don’t teach,” California would’ve just made our jobs a little tougher. Last week, Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill ensuring that, come January 2012, there will be at least one aspect of the past students in the Golden State will definitely not miss: gay history.

It is not all that often that women from Indiana I’ve never met change my mind about things, so I thought this warranted writing down. Such was the case with Patricia Barbera-Brown, a South Bend woman I at first took to be of the dour, humorless type, possibly with too many cats and too many cat sweaters. I came across her as part of a CBS News article from February about how she single-handedly browbeat a local Indiana Mexican restaurant chain into retracting their ad campaign.

Most people come into contact with olives in one of three ways: There are the olives that go on pizzas and into into dinner entrees There are the olives (with pimentos) that go into martinis And there is olive oil But it seems odd – how can the fleshy olives found in dinners and drinks [...]

“That’s very serious,” said Russian composer Igor Stravinsky when he laid eyes on General Sherman, the largest living tree on Earth. At more than 270 feet tall (82.2 meters) and weighing 2.7 million pounds (1.2 million kilograms), this sequoia is indeed profound. If you wanted to tie a yellow ribbon around its trunk, well, that ribbon would need to be about 102.6 feet (31.2 meters) long. The tree’s base has a 36-foot (10.9-meter) diameter. And amazingly, the sequoia continues to bulk up.

Another summer, another set of wildfires ravage Southern California. It seems like every year the residents of the “southland” are met with this scary scenario. This article from CNN details how cooler temperatures are giving firefighters some assistance in quelling this blaze that has scorched more than 100,000 acres so far.

One of the supposed benefits of electronic books is that it’s supposed to make it possible for students and other people who need access to lots of books — such as doctors and lawyers — to carry around one device that has loads of texts in it. Voila, no more heavy backpacks!

By the way, I say “supposed” because e-books have taken a long time to catch on, and not because I think e-books are crummy. I’d like to have an electronic book reader myself, but it’s just not in the budget. Yet.

For students in California, “supposedly” may be over with before long. Michael B. Farrell’s article for ABC News explains Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s plan to use open-source textbooks for high schoolers next year. The idea is that it’d cut into the state’s $350 million educational book budget.

Like most other automotive enthusiasts, I love car museums. Of course, the more cars the better, but it doesn’t really matter to me if there are hundreds of cars on display or just a few. I’ve also found that it doesn’t really matter what kind of vehicles are on display…
