Here’s an intriguing proposition from toymaker Arvind Gupta: Could we use trash to build inexpensive learning tools for children? In this video from Ted.com, Gupta demonstrates how several of his toys are built. His passion is as impressive as his inventiveness. Seriously: This man is the MacGyver of toys. With nothing more than a few [...]
When discussing the concept of love at first sight on the most recent Stuff Mom Never Told You episode, Molly and I speak solely from the perspective of being able to actually see the object of attraction. But how might that instant magnetism change if you’re blind? According to one blind man’s account, it seems that ‘love at first sight’ then becomes ‘love at first sound’.
A recent story in the Metro UK about a Polish goose named Buttons who has become a caretaker to a blind dog named Baks reminded me of all of those other similar stories of animals adopting other animals. Buttons has decided that Baks will live, live!, and leads Baks around their shared yard, either by using her long neck to guide the dog or by honking in the direction Baks should walk.
Sometimes you look at an idea, and you know that it is the Stuff of Genius because the idea is so elegant. That is definitely the case with the Haptica watch for blind people. This short video explains how watches for the blind currently work: The idea of touching fragile watch hands sounds ridiculous right [...]
Julie and I will be joining the Stuff Mom Never Told You podcastrixs in Austin, TX this Friday for South By Southwest! Show up at Driskill Hotel at 3:30 P.M. on March 11 with an Interactive badge and you’ll get to meet us, greet us and watch us do this podcasting thing. Sadly, we will be long gone from Austin before most of the awesome music starts happening, so I won’t be witness to the amazing beatbox/DJ virtuoso Beardyman on the 19th.

I was just reading a really cool Q&A with Peter White, the host of the BBC World Service’s “Blind Man Roams the Globe,” a broadcast in which White gives listeners a taste of what it’s like to “sightsee” when you can’t see.
In The Independent article, White describes the marble at the Taj Mahal as “incredible to the touch” and “a wonderful smooth sensation,” but indicates that the spirituality of the place was more difficult to grasp when it couldn’t be heard — at least not in the voices of tourists who were discussing the latest TV shows (as was the case when he visited).
On the other hand, a soccer match in Istanbul was a feast for the ears …
Point and counterpoint – Is Aspartame making people blind?
by Marshall Brain | October 11, 2010
Glenn Beck has recently announced that he is having unspecified vision problems. And Glenn Beck is known to be a consumer of Diet Coke. Therefore, there has been a rush to blame Aspartame for his vision problems, as seen in this article: Warning to Glenn Beck: Don’t Drink Diet Coke The article certainly sounds convincing: [...]
Millions of people around the world suffer from forms of blindness caused by the failure of the retina’s rods and cones. However, the optic nerve is still intact. Therefore, if scientists could find a new way to pump electronic signals down the optic nerve, the brain would be able to see. In Australia, it appears [...]
