Vegetarians, I hope that what I’m about to say doesn’t offend, but I love bacon. It doesn’t feature in my daily diet, I’ll buy a pack every few months or so and indulge in all sorts of bacon-laden delights until the very last strip sizzles away sadly in the frying pan. I’ve even been known to nibble on bacon chocolate (oh yes, it exists) on a special occasion. So imagine my delight when I ran across a post on the Atlantic’s Mixmaster blog about bacon bourbon.

Get ready for a bombshell revelation, blog readers: I love hot dogs. You can quote me on that. If you serve me hot dogs, I will be your friend for life; bonus points if you offer up my favorite toppings, which are chili, mustard and lots of onions. Apparently I lived in Coney Island or Michigan in a previous life — I say that because chili, mustard and onions generally made up a Coney Island hot dog, though that Coney Island style was originally made in Michigan. And that’s a hot dog fun fact for you.

There’s nothing better than waking up to the unmistakable aroma of frying bacon. Even some vegetarians I know admit that the smell is pretty darn tempting — the same ones that are revolted by a whiff of a steak on the grill. In the United States you can choose from all kinds of bacon — center cut, low-sodium, extra thick, maple flavored, etc. You can go for turkey bacon if that’s your bag (which doesn’t really count) or even buy it pre-cooked. We also have Canadian bacon, a.k.a. ham. I’ve mentioned this on the Stuff You Should Know podcast and gotten feedback from our friends from the Great White North explaining that they call “American” bacon “back bacon,” “peameal bacon” or just plain old bacon.

It’s great for breakfast or for lunchtime on a BLT (bacon, lettuce, tomato) sandwich. In California you’ll want to add avocado if you want to fit in.
