I received an invitation this week to tag along with Georgia Tech lecturer Bill Leahy as he and his class visited the augmented reality and wearable electronics labs on campus. I got a chance to see some cool applications that students have built as class projects and general research and development. They showed off an augmented reality browser as well as several games, all on handheld devices like the iPad 2 and the HTC G2 Android phone. Needless to say, I was thrilled to be there.

I’ve been thinking about this since a fellow traveler mentioned it over vacation. “No one wants to go into space anymore,” he said. “It all started with the Walkman. The kids all slipped on headphones and retreated inward.” I’m paraphrasing a little there and I should stress that no one’s implying that the rise in headphone usage directly links to the public’s decreased interest in space exploration. Hey there! It’s been a long, wet week in Atlanta. But we haven’t let the rain dampen our spirits (even as it soaks through our otherwise dependable London Fog trench coat). This week we bring you two new episodes of TechStuff.

On Monday, we talk about augmented reality, which is the art of overlaying digital information on top of our perception of the real world around us. Remember that scene in Terminator where the audience is treated to the terminator’s point of view and bits of information pop up describing the environment? Wasn’t that awesome? That’s one manifestation of augmented reality. Of course, that was just a movie (or so they tell me). In our world, you’re more likely to encounter an augmented reality application on a smartphone device like the iPhone.

Wednesday’s episode was all about one of my favorite Internet services: Twitter. We talk about how athletes are using Twitter to interact with fans and how some sports organizations are struggling to deal with the consequences. We also highlight my ignorance of sports. I’ve been told this is one of our funniest episodes yet. Click through to read more.
