Yesterday the U.S. Justice Department filed a suit to block telecommunications giant AT&T from acquiring T-Mobile USA based on concerns that the proposed deal would make the mobile telephone marketplace less competitive, according to Bloomberg’s Tom Schoenberg, Sara Forden and Jeff Bliss. CNET’s Don Reisinger quoted an AT&T spokesperson, Senior Executive Vice President and General Counsel Wayne Watts, who said that his company had worked with the Department of Justice to answer its questions and was surprised that the agency had filed suit.
“Don’t buy the iPhone 4 from Verizon” many experts warn
by Marshall Brain | January 17, 2011
“Don’t buy the iPhone 4 from Verizon” – that’s the simple message coming from many experts this week. Expert #1 recommends waiting because you will want the iPhone 5 when it comes out in July. By waiting, you make it possible to get the iPhone 5 without paying a penalty fee: Don’t Buy the Verizon [...]
Something like 10 years ago, HowStuffWorks wrote its first iteration of the article How WIMAX works. It spells out the promise of WiMAX this way…
More than 100,000 Apple iPad users have had their data revealed, thanks to a Web site glitch that allowed hackers to take the information, according to Ryan Tate at Gawker. The group responsible has a French address and goes by the name Goatse Security. Among those with their details exposed include White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, The New York Times CEO Janet Robinson and ABC News’ Diane Sawyer.
When does a joke stop being a joke and evolve into activism (or, depending upon your perspective, sabotage)? If you’re Dan Lyons or AT&T, I’d say we’ll find out tomorrow at noon Pacific time.
That marks the time when Dan Lyons, better known as Fake Steve Jobs, will see if his Operation Chokehold initiative comes to fruition. Operation Chokehold calls for all iPhone users to activate a data-intensive iPhone app in an attempt to clog AT&T’s network. You can read about it in The Secret Diary of Steve Jobs blog (just a fair warning, Fake Steve Jobs tends to use salty language now and then).
In case you haven’t heard of Lyons, he’s made his reputation by blogging as if he were Steve Jobs. It’s a satirical attempt to give us a glimpse behind the glasses and turtleneck of Apple’s co-founder and CEO. It’s all done for laughs, though the butt of Lyons’s jokes aren’t always laughing.
Cell phone provider AT&T has a problem: The owners of Apple’s popular iPhone use lots of data. Some of them use more than lots. As a result, its network has been known to run slowly, especially in places where there are many iPhone owners. Yesterday, AT&T held an investor conference in New York.
You may have heard a couple of weeks ago that Verizon, the No. 1 cell phone carrier in the United States, will soon carry smartphones running Google’s Android operating system. At the time of the announcement, neither Verizon nor Google revealed any details about upcoming handsets running the OS. As we shift toward the holiday season, information is beginning to appear. One of the new handsets is called the Droid.
The Droid (a phone from Motorola formerly known as Sholes) features a physical QWERTY keyboard and will run on Android 2.0. It also has a five megapixel camera with a built-in flash, among other interesting specs. But to me, the most interesting thing about the Droid is how Verizon is advertising it.
Recently, Verizon launched an advertising campaign that hypes the Droid by tearing down the iPhone. Click through to see what Verizon has up its corporate sleeve.
Wired Explains: How 3-D Television Works – “TV manufacturers want to bring that experience to your living room with 3-D displays that work much like the ones in the theaters. Major consumer-electronics companies, including Panasonic, Mitsubishi and Sony, are betting on 3-D, with compatible TV sets planned for the market in 2010….” Inside the Nobel [...]
Three men busted in slots scheme at Meadows Racetrack & Casino – “State police Tuesday arrested three men — including a former Swissvale police officer — in connection with a heist that Washington County District Attorney Steven Toprani called “one of the single largest casino machine thefts in American history.”” Surgeons offer eyesight tailored to [...]
Lots of stuff going on today, so here are some highlights:
Nintendo dropped the price of the Wii to $199 in the United States. John P. Falcone wrote in CNET’s Crave blog about the change, which comes hot on the heels of Sony’s cut in the Playstation 3′s price to $299, and a little farther back, Microsoft’s cut in the 120GB hard drive version of the Xbox 360. I’m guessing that will help push the three consoles through the holiday season, but I’m also thinking sales will remain slow, based on what I’ve heard.
Andrew Nusca wrote at ZDNet that Microsoft‘s acquisition of Danger has yielded two Sharp-manufactured phones, the Turtle and the Pure. These are part of the so-called Pink Project. The pictures look a little like Danger’s Sidekick devices. A few days ago, Mary Jo Foley at ZDNet said Pink Project phones will use a version of Windows Mobile 7 and will be able to use the Zune music store.
