Some stuff I’ve learned recently is as follows:
There is at least an unwritten policy of FEMA called the Waffle House index, which uses whether Waffle Houses in an area are open to determine the level of impact a disaster had on that area. The logic goes that since Waffle Houses are open 24 hours a day every day of the year, if one is closed then an area must be in pretty bad shape. Either the water’s too high for the employees to reach it or the employees are all dead. In either case, the area around the Waffle House could use assistance.
The concept of addiction is a relatively new thing. As recently as colonial America, people drank because they wanted to, there was nothing else to it, certainly not some biological drive that pushed their decisions beyond their own willpower. Over time, people began reporting feeling overcome by the urge to drink or smoke opium or do cocaine, possibly the work of the devil, and the idea that an object like a mug of beer could have an intangible hold over a human being grew into common knowledge.
Initially, it was the addict’s character that was considered at fault. Only a person of poor moral fiber could become addicted to a substance (this idea has always continued to hang around in the shadows of the collective psyche to some extent).

Hi there, folks. If you’re looking for a place to talk about yesterday’s podcast then look no further. It’s happening right here at the weekly podcast goodness blog. Yesterday here on the Stuff You Should Know podcast program we delved into a topic that was pretty darn controversial — the sterilization of addicts. Sounds like something that would never happen, but it turns out it is happening right here in the old USA and is gaining traction in England. The charge is being led by a woman named Barbara Harris and her program called Project Prevention. Harris is the founder of Children Requiring a Caring Community (CRACK), the non-profit organization that carries out Project Prevention.
Mr. Charlie Sheen has been sucking up all of the headlines these days with his multiple interviews addressing his behavior, his addictions and his show. He was first suspended from Two and a Half Men, and finally was fired late yesterday. Watching these interviews has been pretty distressing if you ask me. Sure, it’s funny at first, but in the end what we’re watching is the slow disintegration of a human being.

Judging from the press release, I believe the point of the study was to show how many people use business e-mail and how important it is to protect your e-mail infrastructure.
