The ongoing resurgence in 3-D movies … it’s a gift and a curse. Or maybe just a curse. At least, that’s what I thought until seeing “Hugo” and its use of 3-D to make the movie more beautiful. We recorded this episode before “Hugo” racked up all kinds of Academy Award nominations, but the episode published almost immediately after. Funny thing, that.

A few weeks ago, a TechStuff fan posted a link to a YouTube video that managed to scare the pants off me (which is why I’m required by HR to wear, at minimum, two pairs of pants when I come to work). The claim in the video was that an inventor had discovered a way to perceive 3-D images on a television screen without the use of active 3-D glasses. Active glasses have shutters in them that open and close faster than we can see. The shutters synchronize with images on the television screen — each eye only sees one set of images. Your brain combines the two sets of images into a single image that appears to have the dimension of depth. The invention in the video seemed to achieve this by making you blink your eyes in sync with the television screen.

I found this cool app this morning — VentureBeat’s Dean Takahashi wrote about a new desktop utility called BumpTop that turns your desktop into a 3-D environment. You can pile files on top of one another, pin them to the walls and more to keep things organized. Honestly, I’ve only played with it for a few minutes, but it’s extremely cool.

It all started with a guy named Anand Agarawala who decided to create a new sort of desktop for his master’s thesis. When he graduated, he decided to turn it into a regular business. And yesterday, Takahashi said, the product released for the first time. It’s out for Windows, and Linux and Mac versions are coming.

BumpTop lets you drag and drop files on top of one another, much like you might do on your desk to keep things straight.
