Your body needs calcium for two things. First, calcium is what gives your bones their strength. Your body contains several pounds of calcium in its bones. Calcium is also important to your cells. For example, it is an essential part of muscle contractions, as shown here:

If you don’t get enough calcium in your diet, your body steals the calcium it needs from your bones. Ultimately this process of calcium stealing leads to osteoporosis, which weakens the bones and makes them frail. It is therefore important to get enough calcium in the foods you eat.
