What is the best laptop computer in the world? — Sachira, Los, Miss.

Marshall Brain Answered:
It really depends on what you want to do with your laptop, and the answer changes almost every day. For example, this video is two weeks old (today is August 3, 2009):

He is talking about the best “desktop replacement” laptop for gaming, and he advises that you get a laptop with “Nvideo GTX260m or GTX280m video on board” along with a 7,200 RPM hard drive and 4 GB of RAM.

Nvidia advertises the 280m right now as The Fastest Notebook GPU ever. Next year it will be something else, but at this moment it is the fastest.

In the video he recommends a “7,200 RPM hard drive”. Most others would recommend a flash hard drive instead because they are a lot faster. The “best” desktop replacement machine would also have an LCD screen with full HD resloution (1,920 x 1,080 pixel (or better) LCD).

So, if you hunt around, you can find laptops like this:

Alienware’s M17X gaming laptop with twin GTX 280M GPUs truly is all powerful

It has not one but two GTX280m GPUs, an Extreme quad-core processor, up to 8 GB of DDR3 RAM and an available SSD. Screen resolution is 1920 x 1200 pixels. This review calls it, “The fastest gaming laptop we’ve ever tested.”

The problem with this laptop is that it costs $4,000 and weighs 12 pounds. And that’s the thing. This is definitely the fastest laptop (for the moment), but it may not be the best for most people because it is so heavy and so expensive.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, I own an Eee PC netbook. It has a slow single-core processor, a much smaller screen, a tiny 8GB flash hard disk. By comparison to the M17x it is pathetic. BUT it cost less than $300, it weighs only 2 pounds and it is indestructible. I can literally toss it across the room to one of the kids without worrying about it. For me, the Eee PC is the “best” laptop for the way I use it.

It really depends on what you want to do with your laptop.
