You asked:

If female mosquitoes are the only ones who bite, then what do male mosquitoes do? --- Bruce, Atlanta, Ga.

Marshall Brain Answered:

It is true that the female mosquito is the one who is flying around biting human beings. That means that female mosquitoes are sucking the blood of billions of humans every day, and also spreading lots of blood-born diseases. The female in most mosquito species needs the blood in order to lay eggs.

It is easy to imagine male mosquitoes sitting around watching ESPN and swilling beer all day long. But instead they are watching plants and looking for the right kind of nectar. A male mosquito doesn't even have the equipment to bite a human. Instead, they act a lot more like butterflies or houseflies.
