Public Service Announcement – Exercise is even more valuable than we thought

You always hear that it is good to exercise. But why? And how good is it? A new study shows that exercise is incredibly valuable to human beings:

Regular Exercise Reduces Large Number of Health Risks Including Dementia and Some Cancers, Study Finds

People who take regular exercise could reduce their risk of developing around two dozen physical and mental health conditions — including some cancers and dementia — and slow down how quickly their body deteriorates as they age…

The benefits are pretty amazing. They affect:

  • cancer
  • heart disease
  • stroke
  • dementia
  • depression
  • obesity
  • type 2 diabetes
  • high blood pressure

That’s a pretty amazing list. How much exercise are you suppose to get if you want to take advantage of all of these benefits? According to the American Heart Association, you should try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise (e.g. walking) per week. They’d like you to be doing more, including some weight training and high-intensity cardio stuff, but the 150 minutes is a baseline. So if you took a 30 minute (about a mile and a half or two miles) walk 5 days a week, you’re done.
