Good question – What is it like to drive a Nitro-burning Funny Car?

If you have ever seen a Funny Car race, you have seen it from the outside. But what does it look like from the driver’s perspective, inside the cockpit? Here’s the answer:

At the start of the video, the body of the car is in the up position, and the engine isn’t running. A mechanic starts the engine at the 15 second point (see how a top fuel engine is started in the dragster video below). They drop the body at the 45 second point. He does his burnout at the 55 second point, which is why the cockpit fills with smoke (and one reason why he is wearing a respirator). He has to backup to the starting line and then get into position on the line. He launches at 2:32.
