DIY - build your own backhoe

If you are going to do a lot of digging, one option is to spend a week with a shovel. The other option is to get a small backhoe. You could rent one, but what fun is that? So a little industry has grown up around DIY, towable mini backhoes. This video shows you a typical unit, with parts and plans coming from a company called CADDigger:

These are incredibly simple hydraulic machines. You have a small gas motor attached to a hydraulic pump. There are three hydraulic cyliners and a valve for each. See How Hydraulic Machines Work for details. You can order CADDigger plans and kits here:
