DIY - Build a robot lawnmower

The kids want to build something, and one of the possible projects is a lawn mowing robot. So I have been doing some research on how hard this project might be.

Just to compare, here is what you can buy off the shelf in the world of lawn mowing robots:

The problem, and the reason why you might want to consider a DIY project on this, is that the price tag is pretty high ($2,400 here). This model from Friendly Robotics is in the same price range.

So let's say you want to build one yourself. The following video demonstrates one option. This mower started life as a Barbie jeep. The control system looks very simple (not even a computer on board) and it could probably be done for less than $500 even if you bought the Jeep new instead of recycling an old one:
