About Scott C. Benjamin

No bones about it, Scott loves cars. And let's not forget about motorcycles, boats, trains and airplanes. When he’s not answering questions from his ever-inquisitive podcast co-host Ben Bowlin, he’s writing and editing auto articles for HowStuffWorks.com. Scott came to HowStuffWorks.com straight from the epicenter of the U.S. auto industry -- the Motor City -- Detroit, Mich. He lived there for nearly 25 years and at one point found himself working for each of the big three automakers. Whether it's through an article or a “High Speed Stuff” podcast (or both), Scott’s goal is to demystify these fascinating and amazing machines. You can find Scott on Twitter at @CarStuffHSW and on Facebook at the official CarStuff page.

Since all of us at the HowStuffWorks HQ are gearing-up for the big holiday weekend here in the states (and I’m guessing that you are, too), I’m going to make this the shortest CarStuff podcast wrap-up yet. I promise.

On Tuesday, Ben and I talked about submarines — aka subs. Not only do I think you’ll find the info we’ve dug up to be entertaining, but I really believe that you’ll be surprised to learn just how long these stealthy underwater vessels have been used in military action. I know I was shocked. Oh, by the way, I prefer a meatball sub with provolone cheese, and Ben just told me he enjoys a roast beef sub with horseradish. (You know, just in case you’re ever near our office around lunch time.)

I know I mentioned this last week, but I really want to make sure that all our listeners continue to follow us as we change our name from High Speed Stuff to CarStuff. It’s the same co-hosts covering the same wide-range of topics, we’re just calling the show CarStuff now, that’s all. Oh, and you’ve probably noticed we have a snazzy new CarStuff logo to go along with the switch, too. Hope you like it as much as we do!

And now that we’ve got that little bit of business out of the way, let’s get down to…well, business, I guess. Here’s what Ben and I have been talking about on our CarStuff podcast this week.

As you may have noticed, the High Speed Stuff to CarStuff name change is here. Well, sort of. You see, even though we have a really cool new CarStuff logo to go along with our new name, you’ll still find the High Speed Stuff logo hanging around here and there (but just for a little while) as we get everything straightened out on our end. We just wanted to let you know the official switchover is definitely underway.

So, what have Ben and I been talking about on our CarStuff podcast this week?

On Tuesday, Ben and I had a little chat about steampunk cars. And while there’s really no way to get into the specific details about what makes something a steampunk design (at least not in this short blog post, anyway), I can tell you that it involves lots of gears, brass, copper, leather and rivets. Sounds like the perfect materials for car modification, right? But if you’re looking for the real 4-1-1 on steampunk, check out this article on HowStuffWorks.com. And when you’re done reading that (I promise it won’t take very long)…

When it comes to the topics we choose to talk about in our High Speed Stuff podcast, Ben and I really make an effort to be as varied as possible. Just scroll through the wide-range of subjects we’ve covered in the past 150 episodes for proof of that. So maybe that’s why I simply can’t believe we haven’t discussed boats — up until this week, that is. Yes, in the past we’ve talked about plenty of amphibious cars, but we never dedicated a full episode strictly to boats. And I think we’ve jumped into the water head-first on this one…

What a week! Ben and I had a lot to talk about on our High Speed Stuff podcast over the past few days. Care to find out what we were thinking? Well then, here we go.

Inspired by a recent trip to Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s “Little White House” in Warm Springs, Ga., Ben wanted to talk about hand controls for drivers that no longer have use of their legs. I guess FDR owned several cars (cars that were on display to the public, according to Ben) that were outfitted with hand controls so he could continue to drive even after polio had left him paralyzed…

This is a good one. At least Ben and I think so, anyway. In fact, we both found the topics we covered this week on the High Speed Stuff podcast to be really, really interesting. Really. So, what did we talk about?

Well, on Tuesday, we told listeners about a coast-to-coast motorcycle endurance run specifically for pre-1916 motorcycles. Yup. You read that right. Motorcycles that were (for the most part) built prior to World War I. The event is called the Motorcycle Cannonball, and it’s scheduled to be held in September of this year. I think it’s going to be an incredible sight…

I’m excited about this one — really excited. Why? Well, the topics this week were a lot of fun, and I think that enthusiasm is evident when you listen to our show this week. Ben and I really did have a good time talking about these subjects over the last few days. So without further delay, here’s what’s happening on the High Speed Stuff podcast.

On Tuesday, we finally got around to talking about my all-time favorite racing event — the Indianapolis 500. I really can’t even begin to tell you what this race means to me on a personal level. I’m a Hoosier, and I spent most of my early years…

Well, it’s Friday once again. And you know what that means, right? It’s time for the High Speed Stuff podcast wrap-up! So let’s get this thing underway.

On Tuesday, Ben and I talked about armored cars. And while we started out with our focus on armored trucks, not military trucks, but rather the kind we often see in the city loading and unloading bags of cash and coins at local businesses, we eventually did bring the conversation back around to armored cars. Near the end of this episode, Ben even surprised me with a use for armored car technology that I hadn’t thought of prior to Tuesday. What exactly did he say?

You know how sometimes Friday arrives a little too quickly, and other times it seems to take forever to get here? Well, this week has felt exceptionally long to me. But the good news is that it’s finally Friday and you know what that means — it’s time for the High Speed Stuff podcast wrap-up. So are you interested in what Ben and I had to say this week? Then let’s get started.

On Tuesday, we tried to explain Japanese dekotora trucks to our listeners. Why do I say “tried” to explain? Well, take a look for yourself and then let me how you’d describe something like this.
