And no, it’s not some anemic, wedge-shaped city car, either. For that hefty price tag you get the staggering performance of the 2014 McLaren P1 supercar. How fast is it? Well, it’s 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in “less than three seconds” fast. And that, along with a top speed of 350 km/h (218 mph), puts it in a very exclusive group of cars that can claim to be the fastest street legal production cars in the world.
The car’s exterior design isn’t really breaking news — in fact, the P1 was revealed at the Paris Motor Show in late 2012. But, other than the body shape, McLaren has been somewhat tight-lipped about what’s underneath that gorgeous skin. That is, until earlier today when McLaren made headlines by announcing the base price, along with some new details about the interior, the engine (including its Instant Power Assist System, aka IPAS) and the overall performance figures.
This rear-wheel drive hybrid makes 903 horsepower and 663 pound-feet of torque using a combination of a 3.8-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine and an electric motor. And, with what McLaren calls “instantaneous throttle response” throughout the entire rev range, it must be an amazing car to drive.
