PopStuff Show Notes: Episode 148: PopStuff’s Oscar Costumes 2013

by |

You know Holly and I love costumes. We don’t necessary love ponderous movies. This year’s costume nominees … maybe a little ponderous. We had to split it up, but, unlike last year, we did see all five of the nominees, once we combined our efforts.

  • The nominees are:  Jacqueline Durran (“Anna Karenina”); Paco Delgado (“Les Misérables”);  Joanna Johnston (“Lincoln”); Eiko Ishioka (“Mirror Mirror”); Colleen Atwood (“Snow White and the Huntsman”)
  • “Anna Karenina”: I wander and wander about how pretty and also weirdly disjointed it was, before we get to the part about how they’re ‘50s elements and 1870s silhouettes, which isn’t actually all that new. We also have some thoughts on the film’s use of color.
  • “Les Miserables”:  Holly talks about the immense scale of the thing, and the use of theater techniques to make the costumes effective, and weight gains/losses required for the actors, and the use of costuming and makeup on the impoverished people.
  • “Snow White and the Huntsman”: Holly predicted this (and “Mirror Mirror” would be nominated for Oscars, and they were. Then I derail the conversation about the tone of some of the press about the costumes. Holly then gets into the specific of some of the tiny details on the gowns in the film. Holly also talks about some of the technical feats of body doubles.
  • “Mirror Mirror”: My feeling that the costumes are really on the nose, and how maybe that really worked. We also talked a little about Eiko Ishioka’s other work, such as “The Cell.” We also talk about the deliberate blending of different historical eras.
  • “Lincoln”: It’s Joanna Johnston’s first nomination, although she’s done a ton of other movies. We discuss underpinnings and the huge number of principal actors to be costumed. We talked, again, about weight. I didn’t realize how many of these films had weight gain and loss among the actors as a running theme.
  • Our predictions are conflicted! I think “Mirror Mirror,” but Holly thinks not. Maybe “Lincoln.”
  • Listener mail! From Brian, on our commentary podcast and our glaring omission.
  • How the Oscars Work
