This much snow fell while I was in Boston, and life just went on. (Photo by Tracy V. wilson)
We both live in the South, though we’ve lived in other places with varying amounts of snow. But nothing really prepared me for the mind-boggling ordinariness of a snowy New Year’s in Boston, Mass. Inches of snow fell in hours and … life went on. As though nothing was different. It was weird. Thus, today’s episode:
- The Blizzard of ‘93
- Some other snow anecdotes, including a snow/ice combo that shut down Atlanta for about a week in 2011
- Snow cream (yes it’s a real thing we did all the time is kids) (the recipe my mom made was roughly analogous to this Paula Deen one)
- Measuring snow with a measuring stick
- The blame game in poorly prepared cities (which are poorly prepared because it rarely snows there)
- The four-wheel-drive vehicle route for people who have to get to work in places that don’t get a lot of snow
- The non-comprehension of snowy place people and non-snowy place people
- An Atlanta Radio Theater Company audio drama about driving on ice
- The one-upmanship of places that have worse weather than the place where the weather is happening now
- Some Chicago plowing drama
- The Chicago plow tracking app and the Chicago bus tracking app
- Snow love: kids vs. grown-ups
- The “Northern Exposure” episode with the first snow and Bon Iver
- “The Shining”
- Extreme sledding
- Buying up all the bread and milk
- Listener mail! From Jason, on Facebook, about our episode on how to build a Southern person
