In Stuff to Blow Your Mind’s recent episode Decision Fatigue: Death by 1,000 Choices, I mentioned that one way to cut down on the steady attrition of your decision-making faculties is to trust in a good DJ or mix podcast.
This Halloween, I recommend exactly this to save yourself the anguish of formulating your own paranormal party playlist or macabre mixtape. Because really people, the pros have got you covered on this one — and you won’t have to endure “Monster Mash” in a single one of them.
Oh yeah, and they’re all totally free.
Selection One: First up, there’s UK DJ duo Evil Nine. Tom and Pat unleash a new “VHS Halloween Party” mix every year, loaded with horror movies samples, classic horror synth from the likes of Goblin and John Carpenter and some hopping tunes. This year they give us Volume 4, and it’s loaded down with everything from “Blacula” to Kuedo. Give it a listen:
Selection Two: DJ Deadboy also released a Halloween mix for 2011, this one touching on at least some of the same ground covered in Evil Nine’s mix, but hey, acceptable Halloween mix makes for a pretty small selection pool. Overall, it’s a more upbeat mix, however, with some occasional splashes of hip-hop and drum and base. Good stuff:
Selection Three: But perhaps you want to steer away from horror movie samples. If so, then perhaps this FACT Magazine mix from The Soft Moon is more your speed. It’s laden with goth, post-punk, cold wave and industrial sounds that should help your Halloween digs achieve maximum spookativity for 32 minutes. It’s also available for free via Soundcloud, but FACT has deactivated embedded sharing. So you’ll have to go snag it right here.
Selection Four: But perhaps you want to go even darker. Perhaps you want to create a vibe more in keeping with an electronic, psychedelic séance. If so, then you simply must explore the work of The Wyrding Module. “The Hadronic Seeress and Other Wyrd Tales: Part 1″ is spectacular sonic experience, “inspired by late sixties kosmische music, progressive rock and the occult.” It’s really amazing stuff and you can download it via the ICASEA Podcast right here. You can also access ICASEA via iTunes. Oh, and if you want to get your hands on “The Hadronic Seeress and Other Wyrd Tales: Part 2,” you’ll need to seek access to the offical Wyrding Module website. It’s worth it.
And if these mixes don’t suit, you can always check out SOMA FM’s “Doomed” channel for a non-stop stream of dark and industrial sounds from the likes of Throbbing Gristle. Sadly, Resident Adviser’s mix from John Carpenter soundtrack collaborator Alan Howarth isn’t available now, but if you can hunt that down, you’ll have a solid hour of Carpenter movie goodness.
So there you have it! You can find the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast on iTunes, Zune and the RSS feed. And don’t forget the free HowStuffWorks App!
