The Magic Kingdom, aka Walt Disney World, turned 40 on Oct. 1, 2011. The last time I went, I was five, but Holly goes all the time. So she took us all on a guided tour on what Disney World is like for grown-ups traveling without children.
This episode, at 37 minutes 10 seconds, is one of our longer episodes, just so you know.
Drive-by asides and some points of interest that came up:
- My childhood fear of heights, and how excited I was about the Swiss Family Robinson house in spite of it
- The Haunted Mansion and its facelift, the Enchanted Tiki Room and its retconned facelift, and how the Enchanted Tiki Room directly contributed to me learning arithmetic as a child
- Holly’s favorite Disney World restaurant, Boma
- Victoria and Albert’s at the Grand Floridian
- Epcot’s International Food and Wine Festival
- Running marathons and half-marathons
- Disney’s Cirque du Soleil show, La Nouba
- Expedition Everest Challenge, the nighttime obstacle course race at Animal Kingdom
- Harmony Barber Shop in Main Street, U.S.A. (a polar opposite to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique)
- Halloween and nighttime Halloween parties in the park
- Costume rules for Disney visitors (basically, don’t wear one except at Halloween parties where they’re allowed)
- My emotional equivalent of Disney World, JoCoCruiseCrazy
- Budgeting and saving for a trip as pricey as Disney World can be
- From our colleagues at TLC, “Real Princess or Disney Princess?”
As a side note, if “being nice to people as my job” sounds familiar: See Jonathan Coulton‘s delivery of a similar sentence in this video. Apparently I acted like vocal Silly Putty there. Vocal mimicry, with love.
