You love space music. You love children’s books. So yeah, here are two book projects worthy of your attention. First up is a little project you may have heard about: Canadian illustrator Andrew Klob’s visual adaptation of David Bowie’s classic “Space Oddity.” The other is “Space Cadet,” the book and music project from Canadian DJ, musician and occasional graphic novelist Kid Koala.
Wingsuit Flying a Lil’ Too Close to the Ground
by Amanda Arnold | September 7, 2011
This isn’t your usual wingsuit flying video. First of all, the super-slow-mo is lovely. Second of all, at a certain point, Jeb Corliss, the guy in the wingsuit, is flying so near to the ground that he almost smacks into a guy standing on a mountainside with balloons. It literally looks like Batman is flying at the balloon man, and the balloon man better get out of the way.
Just So Everyone Remembers: Etymology of Geek
by Josh Clark | September 7, 2011
I’m very proud of the geek community. As the gay community did with the word queer, geeks wrested control of a disparaging term from the disparagers and took it as their own. What was once derisive is now a source of pride. That is all well and good; I think it’s important to remember what a geek once was, however, if at least only to preserve the really unique and weird original sense of the word alongside the new one.
Blow Your Mind: The Procrastinating Brain
by Robert Lamb | September 6, 2011
No matter how on top of your to-do list you happen to be, there’s a task or two you’re putting off. Why do we procrastinate? Why do we put off both dreaded tasks and long-held ambitions for short-term pleasures?
In this episode of Stuff to Blow Your Mind, Julie and I breakdown procrastination as the temporal, human planning phenomenon that it is.
Listen in and you’ll gain a better understanding of why you haven’t taken the garbage out yet, and what you can do to cut down on procrastination in your life.
5 More Terrible Places to Take Pictures at Dragon*Con
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 3, 2011
I thought I had mined this territory in the last post. Then I walked through three hotels to get where I was going. I love Dragon*Con and its fans, but in the interest of everyone’s safety and the flow of traffic, here are five more bad choices for picture-taking spots.
I get it. Great costumes are great. Pictures of great costumes are also great. There are many, many great costumes to take great pictures of at Dragon*Con. And it’s really tempting to, in spite of signs that say “No Photography,” think, “I’ll just snap a quick picture. I mean, it’s Princess Leia next to Leeloo Dallas, and Bender is with them! How can I pass that up?”
The trouble is, that temporary stop in forward motion attracts the attention of everyone else who is toting a camera. Before long, the whole hallway is blocked with a series of one quick pictures.
Dragon*Con 2011: Len Peralta Announces Geek a Week Season 2
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 2, 2011
Chanel wrote about Len Peralta’s Geek a Week project — a series of trading cards with illustrations of awesome geeks on the front and bios written by musical duo Paul and Storm on the back — when the original set was reaching its conclusion. Peralta’s follow-up to the series launched on Sept. 2, 2011, and he announced it in a Geek a Week panel at Dragon*Con 2011.
Cute Animal Friday: Blue-footed Booby
by Amanda Arnold | September 2, 2011
When the male blue-footed booby wants to attract a lady friend, he does a jig — to show off the rugged, handsome blueness of his feet.
The male on the left will probably attract a female first because his feet are bluer. That’s just how it works in the animal kingdom.
Dragon*Con 2011: Thimblerig Circus Does Things No Human Should Do with Glass
by Tracy V. Wilson | September 2, 2011
Full disclosure: I’ve known the performers in Thimblerig Circus for a really long time. The Moldavian circus troupe (yes, Moldavia, a place that used to be a place but isn’t anymore) has been performing around Atlanta for a few years now, and I’ve been trying to get together with them for an interview for about half that time. I finally got the chance to interview the group at Dragon*Con 2011 during the Yellow Ribbon Party, the former unofficial fan event to support the USO of Georgia that has become an official part of Dragon*Con programming. (The party still supports the USO.)
Cheating No Longer the Top Reason for British Divorce
by Cristen Conger | September 1, 2011
Divorce lawyers at the firm Grant Thornton reported a new trend in couples severing nuptial ties: affairs aren’t the biggest factor pushing people apart. And, no, it’s not the economy, stupid, although tighter budgets might put a strain on the heartstrings.
