Is Google stacking the Android deck with Motorola?
by Jonathan Strickland | August 15, 2011
The news broke early this morning — Google is acquiring Motorola Mobility for around $12.5 billion. Motorola Mobility makes Android devices such as smartphones like the Droid and the Atrix as well as the Xoom tablet computer. According to Market Watch, Google CEO and co-founder Larry Page said, “Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers.”
Are we rooting for D.B. Cooper?
by Deblina Chakraborty | August 13, 2011
The FBI says the case of airline hijacker D.B. Cooper isn’t a high priority, but you wouldn’t know it. For past couple of weeks, this 40-year-old story of the guy who parachuted out of a plane with a $200,000 ransom, never to be seen again, has been the historical mystery du jour — even though the latest lead in the investigation has proven to be something of a bust.
Rachel here, reporting for blog duty! As a person with loads of German heritage, I was pretty stoked to take a tour (even a virtual one) of Frankfurt. And the city did not disappoint! Then again, what’s not to like about a place where the original frankfurter (the predecessor to my favorite food on the [...]
We just keep hitting these preposterous milestones set forth by satirists and science fiction writers from 50 years ago. Skype, Teddy Ruxpin, reality TV, corporate ownership, televised executions, Running Man. And now, at long last, the death derivative. In nearly the same exact way that mortgages were turned into investment vehicles when they were pooled together, cut into slices and sold as securities, so too have investment banks figured out how to invest in the death of individuals.
If you grew up in a tough neighborhood, chances are you’ve gone to see a scary movie and came out talking all kinds of trash. You probably went home yelling, “I wish those so-and-sos would try something like that around here!” at anyone within earshot, right? Well, what if an alien invasion popped off in the middle of your ‘hood? Think very carefully before you answer, because that’s the basic plot of the movie “Attack the Block.”
Blow Your Mind: The Extreme Sleep of Parasomnias
by Robert Lamb | August 11, 2011
Most of us take a good night’s sleep for granted, but there’s a whole world of bizarre sleep out there that only parasomniacs who scoff at your occasional complaints about “work dreams” and nightmares.
Yes, we’re talking about the world of sleep walking, sleep eating, sleep paralysis, sleep violence, sexsomnia and snoregasms.
Mind-blowing Video: Voyager Greetings From Planet Earth
by Robert Lamb | August 10, 2011
Launched in 1977, the Voyager space probes are currently drifting through our Heliosheath. This is what we call the outermost layer of the heliosphere, the immense magnetic bubble that contains our solar system. As of today, Voyager 1 is more than 117 astronomical units (AU)away from the Earth, while Voyager 2 is more than 96 AU away (current distances updated here). They each carry the Voyager Golden Records, which feature a number of scenes, music, sounds and greetings from Earth.
Claire L. Evans produced the following video for the 2010 World Science Festival, which compiles the 55 earth greetings contained on the disc. Let’s watch:
There’s this excellent recent analogy just sitting there staring us in the face as a perfectly good answer to the question of whether cutting or increasing spending is viable solution to our debt crisis that’s creating such acrimony among Congress and waffling from the president. Just a couple years after it first crashed, pretty much all economists point to a single factor that more than any other sealed the global financial fate into that of doomed: illiquidity.
I like posting these kinds of stories because folks usually get worked up in one direction or another on any kind of UFO talk. This one is pretty neat too, because it hints at one of my all time favorite movies, The Abyss. In that movie, writer/director James Cameron explores the notion that extra-terrestrials are actually found under the sea and not in outer space. Cool stuff.
Do vegetarian and vegan diets affect menstrual cycles?
by Cristen Conger | August 10, 2011
A Stuff Mom Never Told You listener wrote in a couple weeks ago inquiring whether vegetarian and/or vegan diets can affect a woman’s periods. After doing some digging for studies and expert opinions, the simple answer is that there is no simple answer.
