Revisiting the Set of “The Wire” with the Onion’s AV Club

by |

I don’t know how to feel about the fact that one of the best ideas I’ve ever heard for a television series found a home on the Internet, but there’s no denying that “Pop Pilgrims,” the AV Club’s “take on a travel show,” is pretty darn cool. The show’s hosts take pilgrimages (get it?) to various pop-culture Meccas to see if movie and television fantasy can hold a candle to reality. So far, the show has explored the Nakatomi building from “Die Hard,” the diner from “Twin Peaks” and the Initech headquarters from “Office Space,” among others. However, it took a visit to the gritty Baltimore setting of one of my favorite dramas for “Pop Pilgrims” to really get my attention.

I absolutely love the way the show seamlessly transitions from the way a certain locale looks in real life to the way it was used on the show or movie in question. What makes the show’s visit to Baltimore (or Bawlmer if you’re a native) so great is that there really isn’t much difference between the two. To its credit, “The Wire” was never really a show that dealt with bells and whistles. When it came to setting, what you saw was what you got. (The characters, however, were a completely different story.) I geeked out on all the various locations on the show, although I had to laugh when I realized that Marlo’s “hideout” was basically a vacant lot. My favorite location, however, was Novak’s Grocery, site of one of the most pivotal and shocking scenes in the show’s history. (You’re crazy if you think I’m spoiling that one, but the second half of the two-part episode discusses it in detail. Consider yourselves warned.) It looked just as nondescript and unassuming as it did on “The Wire,” but it hasn’t escaped the notoriety of the late HBO series. Asked if he’s aware of the unexpectedly storied history of his workplace, the guy who worked the counter at Novak’s said simply, ‘Oh, people know. They come in and tell me.”

There’s one more awesome aspect to “Pop Pilgrims” that you all should know: The fans program the show. That means that you guys get to pick where the Pop Pilgrims go next. They’re heading to Washington, D.C., Chicago and my hometown of New York City once they’re done with Baltimore, which brings me to my dream Pop Pilgrimage: Chart the gang’s trip back to Coney Island from “The Warriors.” Please? Pretty please? There’s a free Metrocard in it for ya …
