Antibiotic-resistant Bacteria Hot New Ingredient in Meat
by Josh Clark | April 20, 2011
Our current understanding of allergies are that they are defensive measures launched unnecessarily against benign intruders like pollen, which is mistaken by the immune system as a threatening foreign invader. The concept of immunotherapy is based on this logic: By exposing the immune system to small consistent doses of a benign substance like pollen the immune system won’t launch a full-on attack.
Big Trouble in Little China: Where is the universe?
by Robert Lamb | April 20, 2011
John Carpenter’s 1986 film “Big Trouble in Little China” is the greatest film ever made. Sorcery and martial arts? Check. Semi trucks and monsters? Check. A biting commentary on U.S. foreign policy? You’ve got it. And like many of Carpenter’s films, there’s a little space science thrown in where you’d least expect it. I mean, just look to the antimatter and tachyon transmission plot elements in 1987′s satanic zombie romp “Prince of Darkness” or the terraforming in “They Live.” It shouldn’t surprise anyone that even a Carpenter Kung-fu flick full of Chinese legend would also pack in some cosmology.
This truly is inspirational: Step 1 – Person notices problem that affects millions of people. When watching 3D movies in theaters, these people get headaches. Step 2 – Person figures out a solution. He creates 2D glasses that show the same image in both eyes, just like viewing a normal 2D movie. Step 3 – [...]
Let’s imagine the following scenario: You are talking on the phone with your elderly parent or grandparent in another state. Suddenly you hear the sound of gasping, and then the line goes silent. You call out and get no response. Now what? Or even worse, imagine being caught in this situation: Boyfriend watches on webcam [...]
Testosterone, Sex and the Polyamorous Woman
by Cristen Conger | April 20, 2011
If you’ve listened to the Stuff Mom Never Told You episode on polyamory (recorded LIVE from SXSW), you know what polyamory looks like on the outside. Sometimes referred to as “committed nonmonogamy,” polyamorous setups revolve around multiple partners engaging in emotionally committed relationships. In a monogamy-centered society, that idea can come across as oxymoronic and [...]
Mind-blowing Video: Milky Way Galaxy Time Lapse
by Robert Lamb | April 20, 2011
Via the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast, Julie and I have put the call out for listeners to help us take over the #blewmymind hash tag on Twitter. Previously, there was a lot of less-than-mind-blowing stuff tacked onto that tag, so our fans have started hitting it with genuine cranium-fracturing science and wonder. Which brings us to this amazing time lapse film, brought to our attention on Twitter by Chris AKA @thedangermoose.
Filmed between April 4 and 11 of this year, the footage captures some amazing views of the Milky Way from the secluded heights of El Teide, Spain´s highest mountain. Here’s a cool tidbit on the footage from filmmaker Terje Sorgjerd:
I received an invitation this week to tag along with Georgia Tech lecturer Bill Leahy as he and his class visited the augmented reality and wearable electronics labs on campus. I got a chance to see some cool applications that students have built as class projects and general research and development. They showed off an augmented reality browser as well as several games, all on handheld devices like the iPad 2 and the HTC G2 Android phone. Needless to say, I was thrilled to be there.

You asked: Is it possible to turn Mars into another Earth? Marshall Brain answers: The process of turning mars into an earth-like planet is called terraforming. However, Mars could ever be exactly like earth. To turn Mars into another earth it needs: – More gravity – More water – More atmosphere – Higher temperatures – [...]
Imagine that you are an inventor. You have been working for six months on your latest, greatest creation. You run to your spouse and shout, “Honey, I’ve done it! Come watch!” And your spouse sees this demonstration: It is amazing and cool. Also mysterious – how can the thing pick up mayonnaise like it is [...]
