The Chocolate Hills of the Philippines

Weird, right? (iStockphoto.com)

Unfortunately, these hills aren’t really made of chocolate.

But they do look funny. Don’t they?

Philippine legend made up a couple of stories to explain them: In one, some giants get into a rock fight (and the rocks are the hills). In another, the hills are the tears of a forlorn giant.

But of course scientists have their own stories — that the Chocolate Hills are coral/limestone deposits eroded into perfect conical shapes by rainwater and weather. The scientists don’t think the giants had anything to do with it.

The hills remain grassy and green during the wet season, but turn chocolaty brown during the dry season, and are most beautiful to behold at dusk and dawn. There are about 1200 of them on the island of Bohol, and each stands about 390 feet high. You can check them out from a viewpoint near a town called Carmen, according to Lonely Planet. Why not stay the night so you can gaze out at the sea of chocolate chips at dawn?
