Women Spend $50K on Hair Alone

Women's hair ain't cheap. (*Saffy*/flickr Creative Commons)

If you haven’t noticed from my blog and Facebook photos, I have long hair. Therefore, I probably spend a little bit more on its upkeep than women with shorter styles and certainly less than crew cut-sporting guys. In general, women’s hair costs more than men’s, with more expensive haircuts (blowouts and styling included) and pricier haircare products. Even this thrifty nickel has dropped $80 for to-die-for shampoo and conditioner.

But my hair nearly fell out in shock when I ran across this survey finding that Molly and I didn’t mention in the Stuff Mom Never Told You episode on whether it costs more to be a woman. A British survey from shampoo manufacturer Tresemme found that ladies spend $50,000 on their hair over their lifetimes. From Stylelist: “Each year, we spend an average of $160 on shampoos and conditioners, $120 for styling products and $520 for haircuts. And for those of us who color our locks, add in another $330 a year.”

However, since we learned in the podcast that men and women spend their money differently, with women spending more on, say, beauty products, while men drop chunks of cash on electronics, where’s the male equivalent budget line item? My knee-jerk guess is video games, but that feels so gender stereotypical…kinda like women blowing $50k on their hair.
