Tone Deaf Whale Cruises Seas Alone

Oh my goodness. A whale has stolen my heart.

Poor little enormous mammal is swimming the seas alone because his voice sounds weird.

I was just reading about the “52 Hertz whale” over at GOOD. According to NYT, scientists who tracked the whale between 1992 and 2004 say the whale sings at the basso profundo frequency, or “just above the lowest note on a tuba.” Most whales have much deeper singing voices — at the 15 to 25 hertz frequency, according to GOOD.

But here’s where it gets sadder: 52 Hertz’s migration patterns don’t seem to have anything to do with other whales out there. So, he’s just swimming around aimlessly, singing out-of-tune Mariah Carey, or something.

In whaledom, singing is important; they sing to check in with their pod members, to alert one another to food, and to flirt with the ladies, according to MSNBC. Amazingly, their songs can travel as many as a thousand miles.

Is 52 Hertz deaf? Can the other whales simply not hear him because he’s a soprano? Or does his singing voice just hurt their ears? We need to get to the bottom of this. ‘Cause bless his heart.
