Can sitting too much kill you? – “We all know that physical activity is important for good health—regardless of your age, gender or body weight, living an active lifestyle can improve your quality of life and dramatically reduce your risk of death and disease. But even if you are meeting current physical activity guidelines by [...]
Lots of tech bigwigs are making the news this week. Jonathan already wrote about Apple’s co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs temporarily stepping down for health reasons. But today, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt wrote on the company blog that the top brass at the Internet giant are shuffling their roles a bit. The point, Schmidt wrote, is to simplify the corporate structure and make managing the company more — well, manageable. So Schmidt will be the new Google executive chairman, conducting business deals and negotiations.
As you watch the following video, which shows you the world’s 10 largest superyachts, you will notice that they all look like boats. The are long and narrow and pointy at one end: What is about to become the world’s most expensive superyacht is nothing like that. Instead, it looks more like a floating town. [...]
Ever find a headline that struck you as hilarious, but you couldn’t really put your finger on why? That for me today is “Neither Sean Bean Nor Boromir In The Hobbit” over at TheOneRing.net. Maybe it’s the neither/nor. Maybe it’s that I’ve been following TORn since well before “Fellowship of the Ring” hit theaters, so I have a pretty big soft spot for everything they do. Or maybe it’s the overall obviousness of it all. Of course “Boromir” isn’t going to be in “The Hobbit.” He wasn’t in the book.
Cristen and I have done several Stuff Mom Never Told You episodes about our love of reading. We discussed chick lit and children’s literature, each time asking our listeners to send in a list of the books on their reading list (you can check out this old blog post to see the top picks from this past year). It was only a matter of time before we got around to discussing librarians; in many cases, it may be a librarian who fostered or enabled your love of reading. And, in grand Mom Stuff tradition, there were plenty of gender stereotypes to consider when it came to librarians.
Story 1 For Christmas the twins got little indoor helicopters: u-Control Silver Bullet Mini RC Helicopters These are great toys in the sense that the twins LOVED them. They played with them all day. However, they are not-so-great in the sense that they are very hard to control. That means that they crash a lot [...]
Defeat Your Doppelgängers: Clonal Pluralization of Self
by Robert Lamb | January 20, 2011
We all want to fit in, but at the same time we want to stand apart from the crowd. We’re thrilled when we’re the first to discover a new musical artist, but then we’re disappointed when our friends don’t jump on the bandwagon with us.
If you suffer from Clonal Pluralization of Self, however, life has an unhealthy compromise for you. This particular delusional misidentification syndrome boils down to the belief that there are many physically and psychologically identical copies of you in the world.
Yesterday I put up a post about a company that has the potential to completely eliminate the use of fossil fuels: The impossible has happened: the solution to global warming and foreign oil dependence has arrived They have created bioengineered creatures that produce diesel fuel on demand. They claim they can produce 15,000 gallons of [...]
Apple eyes ARM for future Macs – “Rumour has it that Apple is planning to shift its Mac line back to RISC processors, ditching Intel for industry darling ARM – but would it really make such a major change so soon after adopting CISC?” Nintendo 3DS in-depth preview, slight return (update: more videos!) – “Immediately [...]
