Lots of tech bigwigs are making the news this week. Jonathan already wrote about Apple’s co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs temporarily stepping down for health reasons. But today, Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt wrote on the company blog that the top brass at the Internet giant are shuffling their roles a bit.
The point, Schmidt wrote, is to simplify the corporate structure and make managing the company more — well, manageable. So Schmidt will be the new Google executive chairman, conducting business deals and negotiations. He’ll reach out to work with the government and work with Larry Page and Sergey Brin in their new roles.
Speaking of Page, starting on April 4, he’ll be the new CEO, which puts him in charge of corporate strategy. Brin will be working on developing new products. His official title will be co-founder. So now when I write his title before his name, now I have to capitalize it when I didn’t before.
Schmidt said that the changes should help the company make decisions more quickly. It certainly shows how the company has evolved since it diversified its products and services from its core search business. Time, of course, will tell, but I think it’s a positive move. I’m sure many will ask why management is making these changes when the company is doing well, but it can be good to make improvements before you start having problems.
