I readily admit that I’d never heard a peep about this movie before yesterday. Thirty seconds after I saw the trailer on Gawker, however, I’d forwarded it to several friends with the subject heading, “Oh. Em. GEEEE!!!!” (Yes, this clip turned me into a 12-year-old.) I know it’s silly to dub “Hanna” my favorite action film of 2011 on the strength of a two-minute trailer, but the story of a (barely) teenage assassin trained by her father to defeat the shadowy organization that may or may not have trained him seems too cool to pass up. This isn’t your average brainless shoot-em-up either: There are at least three Academy Award nominees involved in the project, including the director and two of the film’s stars. And did I see Adelle DeWitt in there?!
I know, right — an action film with a pedigree? It sure seems so: I’ve seen Internet commenters compare this film to other highbrow genre flicks like “Kill Bill,” “The Bourne Identity” and “Let the Right One In.” Me? I see it as what would’ve happened if Danny Aiello hadn’t made poor little Natalie Portman cry at the end of “The Professional.” (Am I the only one who still wants to see Mathilda “clean” onscreen?) I’d like to compare Hanna to Hit-Girl, but the trailer led me to believe that Hanna takes a lot less glee in her work. Take a look at the trailer to see what I mean.
This trailer may have turned me into a hyperactive tween, but I have to play the responsible adult here and pose the question: Are we going to see more characters like Hanna in the years to come? We’ve already seen at least one kiddie killer on screen this year, and, as Gawker noted, by the time the YA smash “The Hunger Games” hits the big screen in 2013, we could have a full-blown trend on our hands. In a strange way, audiences have been conditioned to accept this level of juvenile violence: Young vampires have been wreaking havoc onscreen for some time now, but will audiences accept a human girl taking out bad guys with impunity? I don’t know if this is a trend worth welcoming, but seeing a tiny teenager pull a Jason Bourne sure looks cool. For now.
