The Jakarta Globe reports that the Twitter account of Andi Arief, the government adviser for disaster management and social affairs, was hacked on Thursday. Someone managed to hijack the adviser’s account, @AndiAriefNew, and send a message to his 8,500 followers: “Besok jakarta tsunami” (“Jakarta tsunami tomorrow”).
Aside from the loss of face, there doesn’t appear to have been any fallout or panic created by the tweet. The hacker also sent other messages, mocking other national officials and prompting an indignant response (“You, the one hacking Andi Arief’s account, please return it! You are not conducting elegant politics! Coward!”) from a Arief staffer.
The adviser’s account is not the first to be hijacked. In recent years, the Twitter accounts of the New York Times, Axl Rose and BP America and have all been taken over and used to issue false tweets. The popular feed, S**t My Dad Says was hijacked in early November and used to send a link to a discount laptop scheme site.
The idea that the disaster adviser would casually issue a cryptic warning about an expected tsunami coming the next day is, arguably, hilarious.
It reminds me of the second clip from this Japanese TV show, where the guy shouts, “Tsunami!” Again, hilarious.
