Lamborghini Sesto Elemento – a carbon fiber masterpiece

by |

These beauty shots of the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento show the stunning looks of the car…

But the real beauty of the Sesto Elemento is in the power to weight ratio, made possible by carbon fiber. One of the things that makes the Lotus Elise so much fun is its ratio, as seen on this page:

Lotus Elise Model Comparison, Power, Handling

The Elise weighs about 900 kg (2,000ish pounds) and it has a 189 HP engine, giving it 10.4 pounds that each horse has to move around. It is quite zippy. For comparison, the Brain family minivan weighs 6,000 and has a 192 horsepower engine, or 31 pounds per horse. It is not.

The Sesto Elemento weighs just 100 kg more than the Elise, but triples the horsepower. So it weighs 999 kg and has 560 HP on tap. Each horse has to move only 3.9 pounds, a staggering improvement. 0 to 100 kph happens in 2.5 seconds.

How do they make it so light?

Lamborghini unveils Sesto Elemento carbon fibre concept car

The car is based around a carbon fibre monocoque passenger cell manufactured in a one-shot process.

Connected to the monocoque are the front subframe (incorporating the suspension points) and the crash boxes, both also made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). The rear subframe, with the engine mount and rear axle suspension points, is made from aluminium.

The exterior panels, major suspension components (control arms), the wheels and the drive shaft are also made of CFRP. The tailpipes are made from Pyrosic, an advanced glass-ceramic matrix composite, able to withstand temperatures up to 900°C.

The Ariel Atom is one car that beats the Lamborghini , but it is not really a car. It is more like a big go kart. Still, the Ariel Atom 500 V8 has phenomenal performance:

With over 500bhp available the Atom V8 has a power to weight ratio in excess of 900bhp per tonne. (Ferrari Enzo 434bhp per tonne, Bugatti Veyron 530bhp per tonne, GP2 single seater 850bhp per tonne). Race car acceleration and up to 200mph for this ultimate Atom set a new level in trackday cars.

The Sesto Elemento is 560 HP/tonne, so it beats the Veyron and the Enzo.
