This video nicely demonstrates three different ways to create a windmill: a horizontal-axis approach, a vertical-axis approach and a flutter approach:

You can see that there are two parts to a windmill: 1) a way to capture the wind’s energy (often a set of blades) and 2) a way to covert the captured energy into electricity (a generator).

There are lots of different ways to put the pieces together. For example, in the following video a student named Max Robson uses old bike parts to hold down expenses:
