How Typography Works – which brings up the question, “What if YouTube used the Dewey Decimal System?”

by |

I will admit that I can make it through entire days (sometimes even weeks or months) without ever once thinking about typography. Yet, as mentioned in this video, it does surround us. Therefore it is an interesting video to watch:

For a nice intro to typography:

For much more info see: this and this

As I watch the first video, two things come to mind. First, when she wears the necklace, is that the best typography for the number?

Second, she uses the word “curate” in the headline, which for some reason immediately made me think of “librarian”, which made me wonder, “Why doesn’t YouTube use a Dewey Decimal System or something similar to organize the videos in another way?”

Think about what the DDS does. I puts books into classes, and it also put books into a linear order. So when you go to the X section of the library, all of the books there are related to each other in some way.

If YouTube used the DDS, and you had a book, you could find a whole bunch of videos related to that book instantly on YouTube.

DDS is linear. Could DDS might benefit from a multi-dimensional approach (for all I know someone has already invented this, but it didn’t work)? YouTube could make it two-dimensional, three-dimensional, etc.

A DDS approach would have another benefit – all the people doing junk videos wouldn’t bother with the DDS part, so all of their videos would drop out of searches using the DDS.
