What if I told you that, when you meet a potential mate, that person smells “better” or “worse” to you based on the genetic makeup of their immune system? The funny thing is that this appears to be completely true, as vividly demonstrated in this video:
If you take a look at How Your Immune System Works, you can see that the human immune system is a very complex thing. It has to be in order to be adaptable enough to fight off all the bacteria and viruses that are trying to invade the body every day. Apparently evolution has built in a mechanism that helps humans choose mates with complimentary immune systems in order to increase effectiveness of the immune response. And apparently that impacts the people who we find attractive and unattractive when we smell them.
What does this mean? One thing it means is that, if your date is prone to wearing perfume/cologne, you may want to have him/her try not wearing any. Imagine dating someone for a few months while he/she is wearing cologne the whole time. Then one weekend you go backpacking together. All the cologne, deodorants, lotions, etc. lose their scents and you discover a major smell problem due to incompatible immune systems. That would be a problem.
