Last Friday, Google celebrated the 30th birthday of a very special celebrity: PAC-MAN. Google’s logo appeared in the form of a very wide level of the famous arcade game. It wasn’t just a static logo — clicking on the image or choosing the “Insert Coin” option below the search bar would begin an actual game of PAC-MAN. Clicking on the Insert Coin button a second time would allow Ms. PAC-MAN to join the game. You can still find the playable logo here.
Today I am reporting on my fourth week on the Dukan Diet. I lost 2.4 pounds this week, for a total of 19.8 pounds since starting. Day-by-day this is what the week looked like (including an amazingly low (for me) blood pressure reading)…
The following photos shows a logging truck. Unfortunately, while tying down a load of logs, the truck’s driver hooked a high-voltage power line with a steel cable. What happens next is unbelievable…
When it comes to design, steampunk is unique: What if the world never entered the digital age, and all technology was steam-powered? Join Scott and Ben as they take a look at steampunk cars (which don’t actually run on steam) in this podcast.
To most people, planets are one of the most familiar of astronomical objects. After all, we do live on one. But how do these massive spheres get their start? Tune in to learn more about the birth of planets — including our own — in this podcast.

The Food and Drug Administration may be on its way to approving the first prescription drug intended to boost women’s libidos. I’d like to think this has come about since some FDA officials were listening in to Molly’s and my discussion about filbanserin, nicknamed “pink Viagra,” in a Stuff Mom Never Told You episode a couple weeks ago, but I’m probably overstating our clout. For now, anyway.
Here at HowStuffWorks headquarters, the powers that be seem to think we operate best in a perpetual state of deepfreeze. Well, we don’t. In my case anyway, coldness exacerbates sleepiness in a serious way, and the more I enter into a rigor mortis-like state of chilliness, the less I am able to perform basic tasks like typing and, you know, thinking.
So apart from a work-sweater and a work-fleece that are tucked away beneath my desk, I also have an emergency hold-the-phone-I-just-might-be-entering-hibernation-actual-work-blanket. (Seriously, it’s that bad.) Anyway, because of all this, I thought I might compile a list of tips for myself and other workers shivering their way through a frigid workday.
Apparently there are not many people who can complete the gallon-of-milk challenge without puking their guts out. It is nearly impossible for someone to drink a gallon of milk in an hour without throwing up. But why? What makes milk so difficult to drink?
