There is something that is so clever about this. What you need is a self-propelled lawn mower, a rope and a spool of some kind that you can stake into the ground:
Most yards are not perfectly circular, true. But there are one or more large circles that could be factored out of many yards to get at least half of the yard mowed automatically.
