How Treadmills and Exercise Bikes Don’t Work – if weight loss is your goal, High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a better option

by |

As pointed out in the following video, many (if not most) people who use the gym spend a lot of time using treadmills, elliptical machines and exercise bikes. And lots of other people are walking and riding bikes in an attempt to burn calories and lose weight. The problem is that these activities are not the best way to lose weight. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a better option and takes a lot less time. The following video summarizes the point nicely:

One thing he talks about in the video is doing “sets of three exercises” – in his case the example is push-ups, pull-ups and air squats repeated for 20 minutes. In the following video the instructor is doing the same kind to “sets of three” workout to build abs:

The video suggests Crossfit.com as a source of information on these “sets of three” techniques.

He also mentions the Tabata Workout as a form of High-Intensity Interval Training. Here is an introduction to Tabata:

The basic idea with Tabata: Do any exercise (e.g. push-ups) at high intensity for 20 seconds, rest for 10 seconds, repeat 8 times for a total of 4 minutes. You might do this with several different exercises (using different muscle groups for 4 minutes each) for a workout session.

Here is another intro article to HIIT to learn more:

High Intensity Interval Training

If I told you that there was a way to burn more calories, lose more fat, and improve your cardiovascular fitness level while spending less time doing cardio, you’d probably reach for your phone to report me to the consumer fraud hotline, right?

Well, this is one of those rare times when your natural it’s-too-good-to-be-true reaction could be mistaken. If you want to take your fitness and fat loss to the next level—without spending more time in the gym—then high intensity interval training (also known as HIIT) could be exactly what you’re looking for.
