Our Favorite History Movies, Miniseries and TV Shows

by |

It’s been requested that we list our favorite history movies, and you know how Sarah and I love playing fairy godmother. Wish granted.

Sarah’s:

  • “The Untouchables”
  • “1776″
  • “Marie Antoinette”
  • “Quiz Show” (although she’d like to clarify that it’s been a long time since she’s seen it)
  • “Hotel Rwanda”
  • PBS’ “Frontier House”

Mine:

  • “The Duchess” (Georgiana+Katie 4ever)
  • “Persepolis”
  • “Shakespeare in Love”
  • “The Aviator”
  • “Becoming Jane”
  • “Bright Star” (Sarah absolutely hates terminal illness movies, but she loved this)
  • “The Edge of Love” (which no one else saw, apparently)
  • “Finding Neverland”
  • “Grey Gardens” (the doc)
  • “Gone With the Wind”
  • “Quills” (which I wish I hadn’t watched before bed)
  • “Mad Men”

Obviously not going for “historically accurate” here, and our definition of “historical” is a bit loose.

And since we like to be inclusive, here are some HowStuffWorks staff favorites!

Update: Ben Bowlin in video would like to remind us of the “Drunk History” series on YouTube. Below, Michael Cera as Alexander Hamilton:
