Some carbolic acid with your whiskey?
by Katie Lambert | February 24, 2010
It’s easy to romanticize Prohibition — the days of glamorous danger, speakeasies, bootleggers and flappers. The idea of standing up to the government’s enforcement of morality is appealing as well, as those of us who live in states with blue laws (like Georgia) can attest. I always pick up a bottle of wine during my Sunday evening grocery shopping before realizing what day it is and putting it back on the shelf. But as Deborah Blum reminds us on Slate this week, Prohibition was deadly.
Figure skating is taking center stage at the Olympics this week. One of the more mysterious aspects is the judging. Let’s lift the veil and see what is going on behind the scenes. Sasha Cohen provides our first insight to the judging – it is confusing: Here is an older video, but it openly discusses [...]
Here at How-to Stuff, Molly and I like to take on even the most mundane inconveniences of our daily lives. Exhibit A: the foggy bathroom mirror. Am I alone when I say that I regularly think about what my engine’s guts look like? It’s true. I really do find myself wanting to crack open my car’s normally operating engine just to see what’s going on inside there. No, I don’t mean the way it works — I already know that. What I’m talking about is the internal wear and tear that an engine exhibits after tens of thousands of miles and several years of daily use. I’ve got to believe that there are at least a few other curious people out there that feel the same way, right?
Skishing Off the Coast of Montauk, N.Y.
by Amanda Arnold | February 24, 2010
I’ve thought about it and I’ve decided I don’t want to go skishing.
Skishing is fishing, only the fisherman wears a buoyant wetsuit and lets the waves pull him and his rod and reel out to sea. Supposedly, it’s quite peaceful. No screaming boat motor. Nothing to separate you from sea creatures. Just you — bobbing in a big bathtub of ocean, breathing the salty air.
Hmm. Nothing to separate you from sea creatures. And you’ve got bait on your person.
Imagine you walk into a room, you see someone you don’t know, so you point your phone’s camera at the person and your phone tells you the person’s name. It also lets you look up the person on Facebook. It sounds kind of interesting. The following video shows you how it works right now. The [...]
