How could something as simple and common as a chair be your enemy? Nonetheless, this article indicates that chairs are a mortal threat to humans:

It doesn’t matter if you go running every morning, or you’re a regular at the gym. If you spend most of the rest of the day sitting — in your car, your office chair, on your sofa at home — you are putting yourself at increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, a variety of cancers and an early death. In other words, irrespective of whether you exercise vigorously, sitting for long periods is bad for you.

It’s a pretty interesting article overall. The basic idea is that sitting in a chair all day is a huge health problem.

One recommendation is simply to stand while you work. According to the article, you use a lot more muscles while standing simply to keep your balance. This would imply that cash register operators (who stand all day while operating their cash registers) should be thinner, on average, than office workers who sit in chairs all day.
