FBI Investigating School Webcam Incident

by |

Perhaps you’ve been following the situation in Pennsylvania regarding the Lower Merion School District issuing school laptops that could be activated remotely. Student Blake Robbins and his parents filed a lawsuit against the school district, saying that the school system enabled the cameras to spy on students.

The situation is getting worse for the school district. Maryclaire Dale of the Associated Press said that the FBI is investigating whether or not school officials violated federal wiretapping laws. The Montgomery County DA is also considering the possibility of bringing charges. When their kids received the laptops, parents weren’t told that the cameras could be activated over the Internet by school officials. And even though it hasn’t been done a lot, it’s been going on for a while — apparently the cameras have been activated 42 times over the past 14 months.

Dale’s article said only two school personnel were authorized to activate the cameras, and they were only supposed to be used to be used in the event of a possible theft. In fact, the cameras had been used to retrieve several of the machines when they had gone missing.

But it’s unclear if the school system believed Robbins’s laptop had been stolen or lost, and when his school’s Vice Principal Lindy Matsko contacted his family to tell them that Robbins appeared to be doing something improper, she cited a photo that was “embedded” on the computer, Dale’s article said.

In a video from NBC Philadelphia, the family’s attorney said that Robbins was seen eating Mike & Ike candies, which the school officials thought looked like drugs. I don’t think they look much like drugs, but I do think they look tasty.

Privacy groups are going to continue to press authorities to look into the matter and I’m sure it will be a while before everything will be worked out. In the meantime, the Lower Merion School District has disabled the feature on the laptops.
