Invention – the next generation of robot vacuums

The Roomba has been the the state-of-the-art in robotic vacuums for many years. But it is based on some pretty simple technologies, as explained here:

Now the state of the art is about to take a step forward, with the introduction of a laser vision system. The new vacuum is called Neato:

The Roomba follows a random path. A vision system allows at least primitive patterns for cleaning, and lets the robot “see” furniture.

What would be nice is an “arms race” in this marketplace, because the consumers are definitely there. The Roomba folks have sold over 5 million units. An arms race would increase the capabilities and lower the prices.
