Literature lovers, malcontents and misfits everywhere have been in mourning since their patron saint, “Catcher in the Rye” author J.D. Salinger passed away yesterday at age 91. The beloved scribe had been living as a recluse since the 1960s and repeatedly turned down requests for interviews. It’s fairly safe to assume that he would never, ever, ever approve a cinematic depiction of his most famous creation, sullen preppy Holden Caulfield. That assumption is 100 percent correct.

You know, the history podcast hasn’t afforded us nearly enough opportunities to talk about camels. Or long-haired rats. Thankfully for us, if not for Burke and Wills, the Victorian Exploring Expedition let us rectify the situation on Monday’s podcast.

On Wednesday’s podcast, we tackled Toussaint L’ouverture’s role in the Haitian Revolution, a years-long battle that had its roots in the French Revolution and erupted in St. Domingue in blood and fire.

Well, it’s time for another weekly rundown of what Ben and I have been up to on our High Speed Stuff podcast over the past few days. So, here we go…

Tuesday was a good day. That’s because we got to talk about the fastest drag racing cars on the planet — Top Fuel Dragsters. You know the ones we’re talking about, right? These are the 25-foot (7.6-meter) long cars with giant rear wheels and huge V-8 engines that pump out around 8,000 horsepower. They cover the quarter-mile in just over four seconds at speeds upwards of 300 miles per hour (483 kilometers per hour).

This week’s episodes of TechStuff focused on how technology fits within the larger scope of our world. On Monday, Chris and I talked about social networking and whether or not it can affect social change. While we both recognize the potential for social networks to make a real difference in the world, we both think that we’ve yet to see a real success story.

OK, this is pretty neat. Leslie Katz at CNET posted this a couple of days ago and I was saving it for today. It’s a board game that has organic LED (OLED) game pieces. Michael Rooke and Roel Vertegaal of the Human Media Lab of Queens University in Ontario have been working on the idea and published a paper about it.
