New Year’s Resolution: See the Northern Lights

What a (hypothetical) view from my little glass igloo! (istockphoto.com/Romko_chuk)

Here’s what I’m thinking for 2010:

I rent one of those little glass igloos at Hotel Kakslauttanen in Lapland, Finland, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) north of the Arctic Circle. (See a glass igloo picture in The New York Times.) When I arrive, snow is on the ground — the pure, untouched, new kind of snow. I find my way through the dark up to my little igloo, curl up under the covers in my warm bed with some hot chocolate, look up through the glass ceiling at the night sky and — oh my goodness — the Northern Lights begin to flash and swirl. It’s gorgeous and strange and like nothing I’ve ever seen before in my life. The sky is full of stars — writer James Schembari says they seem like they’re “right above your head.”

After I’ve gazed at swirly colors and low-hanging stars for long enough, I rent a snowmobile and speed around in the dark (because the best time to be out in the snow is when it’s dark, if you ask me.) Later, reindeer pull some friends and me around in a sleigh. We’re drinking hot toddies and cracking up.

What do you think? Sound like fun? What’s your dream vacation for 2010?

[Note: Thanks to Robert Lamb for inspiring a glass igloo post. And also -- I'm taking some time off for the holidays. So, see you next year!]
