So how does this illusion work? It is a variation on the “Hering illusion”, which you can see demonstrated on this page:
The standard Hering illusion (1861)
If you look at this page you can see one aspect of the illusion. The diagonal lines create a vanishing point. Our brains expect certain things to happen around vanishing points. So when it applies those assumptions to the straight red lines, the red lines bend.
Look at the tiny squares on the checkerboard. They are creating diagonal lines just like the Hering illusion. These diagonal lines create the same bending seen in the Hering illusion.
