Living a Hunter-Gatherer Life in a Modern World
by Katie Lambert | December 7, 2009
This month’s issue of National Geographic features a story by Michael Finkel on the Hadza, a Tanzanian people who still live a hunter-gatherer existence. The Hadza don’t mark the time or count past the number four. They don’t have possessions or permanent shelters, nor official leaders or weddings. They hunt baboon and gather baobab fruit. Food is shared — or rather, grabbed from the beast in the communal cooking fire.
It’s very tempting to wax lyrical about simplicity when reading articles like this. Finkel himself, although he acknowledges his sentiments as “maudlin,” says that his time with the Hadza made him “calmer, more attuned to the moment, more self-sufficient, a little braver, and in less of a constant rush.”
Despite the very real dangers of living in the bush (snakes, lions, malaria, high infant mortality rates), it does make you wonder who has it better off — that eternal tension between Us and Them. The Hadza work somewhere around four hours a day. Can you say the same?
There were some big, deep cuts in print newsrooms recently. USA Today, the Washington Times, Miami Herald and the New York Times have cut staff dramatically this year. While those outlets have managed to stay afloat for now, local newspapers have been going under altogether. While it’s mainly been print media that’s suffered the most, local TV affiliates have also been axing staff lately.
You Asked: How are airline pilots trained? — Don, Chicago, Ill. Marshall Brain Answers: There is an article on HSW called How Becoming an Airline Pilot Works that goes through the process. Basically pilots work their way up through a series of more and more elaborate licenses. For example, anyone can get a pilot’s license [...]
You Asked: How does a Web site owner make money? — Prashant, Pune, India Marshall Brain Answers: There are lots of different ways to make money with a web site, but it is important to understand the prerequisite: traffic. Unless a web site has visitors, it is difficult to make money in most cases. That [...]
I used to live in Seattle, where gray days are a way of life, so you’d think I’d be able to handle the few gloomy, cold days that Atlanta has had recently. But we’ve had such a warm, sunny fall here in the southeast that just reaching for my heavy winter coat has me feeling sad. That’s lowercase sad, though, not uppercase SAD, which stands for seasonal affective disorder. This disorder usually strikes people during the fall and winter, perhaps because the days are so dark and short (scientists aren’t exactly sure why SAD strikes). Some people, though, do experience SAD’s symptoms during the spring and summer. Some signs of SAD include feelings of depression and hopelessness, weight gain, loss of energy, oversleeping, appetite changes and loss of interest in activities or events that you’d otherwise be gung-ho about.
What puts the spark in a spark plug? Here is a very nice introduction to magnetos and ignition systems. It explains everything from the simple ignition system on a lawn mower to the sophisticated electronic system in a car: For more info see: – How Automobile Ignition Systems Work – How does a magneto work? I’m not usually an early adopter when it comes to TV. The way I see it, time spent in front of the tube is pretty much wasted, and my leisure time is too precious to waste on something that’s not actually good. Instead – at least, until I started FanStuff – I let other people blaze the trails and map out the best shows for me.
So when I started watching “Monk” after hearing about the show on “Morning Edition” in 2004, it already had more than a season under its belt and had picked up its share of critical acclaim. Even so, it took me a while to make the commitment to start at the beginning, watching the whole series first on DVD and then on Hulu. Episodes could telegraph their endings – I often said, “That’s the guy!” long before Monk did – but that didn’t really matter. I had a soft spot for Monk, the former detective who never recovered from the loss of his wife, Trudy.
With 56 newspapers in 45 countries publishing the same editorial, you would think it is something important they are talking about. Here is the editorial: Copenhagen climate change conference: ‘Fourteen days to seal history’s judgment on this generation’ Unless we combine to take decisive action, climate change will ravage our planet, and with it our [...]
Makes you think – a completely different way to think about guns
by Marshall Brain | December 7, 2009
In the United States we have a certain attitude toward guns. That attitude is embodied in the laws we create for gun ownership and use, the way we allow guns to be sold, the way we portray guns in movies, TV shows and news outlets, and the way people use guns in their daily lives. [...]
