A great optical illusion – the diamonds that change colors

How does this optical illusion work? The first thing to understand is that ALL of the diamonds on the sheet of paper, as well as the hand-held diamond, are identical. That seems impossible, but it is true. The key is that the diamonds are shaded so they are slightly lighter at the top and darker at the bottom. That way, when you put them together on the paper in rows, it looks like the rows are different. The white triangles at the top of the paper create the illusion of changing shades in the different rows when, in fact, there are no changes. The white triangles make the top row look much darker than it really is.
