How fast is the fastest car?

How fast is the fastest car? — Steve, Ephraim, Utah

Marshall Brain Answers:

I depends on how you want to define the word “car“.

For example, if “car” means anything that rolls across the ground on wheels, then the fastest “car” is the Thrust SSC, at 1,228 km/h (763 mph), breaking the sound barrier:

And there are plans in the works to beat it with a rocket-powered vehicle called the Bloodhound that can go 1,000 MPH:

If you prefer electric power, then the fastest is the Buckeye Bullet:

If you mean “production car”, as in a car that comes from a factory that people can buy, then the winner is the SSC Ultimate Aero TT (at 256 MPH), followed closely by the Bugatti Veyron:

Then there is the world of short-track speed runs – dragsters, funny cars, etc. The fastest street-legal car is:

Fastest street legal car-world record set by Maxximus G-Force

It is able to go 0-to-60 MPH in 2.1 seconds using a 1,600 horsepower engine.

The fastest diesel dragster can go 0 to 60 in 1.2 seconds:

The fastest dragsters are able to do the quarter mile in 4.42 seconds or so, with a top speed of 328 MPH:

And don’t forget this – created by a “normal guy” from a “normal car” :
